HDFC Bank

Email alerts

HDFC Bank email alerts are called InstaAlerts.

Email InstaAlerts are free — and they matter more than they used to, because HDFC has been cutting back the SMS ones.

The feature is called

InstaAlerts

You can switch per-transaction email alerts on yourself, from online banking or the app.

By Rohtash Singh and Taniya Das, co-founders of Numero

HDFC Bank's transaction alert service is branded InstaAlerts, and it is registered per account rather than per customer. Most HDFC customers have the SMS version switched on by default and have never added email.

There is a concrete reason to add it now. HDFC stopped sending SMS alerts for UPI payments up to ₹100 — which for a lot of people is a meaningful share of daily spending. Those transactions now pass with no message at all unless another channel is on.

What to look for

What HDFC Bank actually documents.

  • The service is called InstaAlerts. Search HDFC's site or ask phone banking for that exact name rather than for “email alerts”.

  • Registration is per account. A salary account, a second savings account and a card held on the same Customer ID each need their own registration.

  • HDFC publishes a printable InstaAlerts registration form you can complete and hand in at a branch — the documented route that does not depend on finding the right online screen.

  • Before registering anything, confirm the email address HDFC holds for you is one you actually read.

Tick the email column — it is free, and it is the copy your inbox keeps.

Worth knowing

The things that catch HDFC Bank customers out.

  • HDFC has stopped sending SMS alerts for UPI payments up to ₹100. Those transactions are invisible unless another channel is on.

  • Registration is per account, so doing it once does not cover a second HDFC account or card.

  • Email InstaAlerts are free — HDFC states they are available at no extra cost.

  • A branch registration form exists, and is the more reliable route if the online screen is hard to find.

Then Numero turns those alerts into a record.

Once HDFC Bank is emailing you reliably, Numero reads what you authorize in Gmail or Outlook and organizes it — merchants normalized, subscriptions detected, refunds tracked to completion. It never asks for your HDFC Bank login, card number, or OTP, and there is nowhere in the product to enter them.

Questions

HDFC Bank alerts, answered

Are HDFC InstaAlerts free by email?

Yes. HDFC states that email alerts are available at no extra cost. SMS is the channel that has attracted charges and cutbacks over the years, which is a good argument for adding email rather than relying on text.

Why did my HDFC SMS alerts stop for small UPI payments?

That is deliberate, not a fault. HDFC stopped sending SMS alerts for UPI payments up to ₹100. Email InstaAlerts and the app are how you keep visibility of those.

Why does this page not give me click-by-click steps?

Because we could not verify them against HDFC's own documentation. HDFC's alert pages are rendered in the browser and cannot be read programmatically, and we would rather tell you the exact feature name to search for than publish a menu path that may already be out of date.
